STEVENS POINT, Wisc. - Norwich University lost to University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point 3-2 in overtime in the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey National Championship.

Coby Downs (Montclair, Calif.) netted both of the Cadets goals and Tom Aubrun (Chamonix, France) made 42 saves in the losing effort.

Norwich advanced to the National Championship tilt by defeating SUNY Geneseo 4-2 in the first semifinal while conference-mate Hobart College fell to the host Pointers 5-3 in the night cap on Friday.

The first two periods saw back-and-forth action with the Pointers holding the advantage of shots on goal, 26-16. But, Aubrun and the Cadets defense held strong and fought off several scoring chances.

The Pointers scored two quick goals to start the third period from Jordan Fader and Colin Raver. But, Norwich refused to go down without a fight. Downs beat the Pointers goaltender blocker side with just under 13 minutes remaining in the third to cut the lead 2-1.

About five minutes later Downs carried the puck through the zone and beat the Point goaltender one-on-one on a breakaway to tie the score at two apiece.

With overtime underway both teams had chances to put the game away in a back-and-forth battle. But, it was Point as the victors when Steven Quagliata beat Auburn high to seal the overtime victory.

Downs and senior captain David Robertson (Boissevain, Manitoba) were named to the All-Tournament team for their performance over the weekend.

Downs, Robertson, Maxime Borduas (St. Cesaire, Que.) and Brett Ouderkirk (Monkland, Ont.) netted the four goals in the semifinal for Norwich. Blake Coffey (Toronto, Ont.), Travis Schneider (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Zach Tyson (Dublin, Ohio) all potted goals for the Statesmen in the semifinal loss.
