Hobart Falls To Geneseo In NCAA Opening Round

GENEVA, N.Y. The No. 5/3 Hobart College hockey team was edged 4-2 by No. 3/5 Geneseo tonight in an NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship first round game in The Cooler.

The Statesmen finish the season with an 18-6-5 overall record. The Knights are now 20-5-3 and advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament where they will face Colby College on March 17.

Geneseo jumped out to a three-goal lead with two goals in the first and another midway through the second. Hobart battled back, scoring in the final minute of the second and adding another 2:34 into the third, but the Knights sealed their victory with a late third period goal.

Senior Andrew Silard and junior Cam Shaheen logged Hobart's goals. Senior Frank Oplinger made 23 saves in 57:56 in goal for the Statesmen. Oplinger finished his Statesman career second on Hobart's career goals against average list (2.13), third in career wins (44), third in career shutouts (7) and fourth in career saves (1717).

Dan Bosio led Geneseo with a goal and two assists. Sotiri Athanasopoulos and Joe Serpico also registered goals for the Knights. Devin McDonald finished with 37 saves in all 60 minutes in goal.

Anthanasopoulos opened the scoring for Geneseo just 1:55 into the game. An initial shot by Bosio was saved by Oplinger but the rebound bounced to Anthanasopoulos who lifted the puck over Oplinger's pads. Just over four minutes later, Seroico gave the Knights a 2-0 lead. Boscio was credited with another assist. At 12:36 into the second, it was Boscio's turn to score, placing his shot in the top right corner to extend the Knights' lead to 3-0.

Shortly before Geneseo made it 3-0, Silard skated down the left side to find sophomore Will Harrison out in front, but Harrison's shot clanged off the post. With 14 seconds left in the second, Silard broke through for Hobart. He sent home a rebound off an initial shot by Harrison. It was Silard's fourth goal this season. The Statesmen kept the momentum into the third. Just 2:34 in, Shaheen tallied his fourth goal of the year to get Hobart within one. He lifted his shot from the slot over the goaltender's pads after a pass from sophomore Mike Faulkner.

Carson Kelly recorded the insurance goal for Geneseo with 4:52 left in the third. Arthur Gordon and Zach Lynes were credited with the assists. The Statesmen pulled Oplinger for an extra skater with 2:04, but were unable to capitalize.

Hobart finished with a 38-27 advantage in shots. The Statesmen were 0-for-1 on the power play and the Knight went 0-for-2.

The Hobart Class of 2018 Jordan Haskell, Andrew Silard, Vincent Russo, Frank Oplinger, Tyler Wolf and Ben Greiner- led the Statesmen to an 80-23-11 four year record, notching a program record for wins by a graduating class. This year's seniors led the Statesmen to four straight conference tournament titles and four trips to the NCAA tournament.
