MARSHFIELD, Mass. – It will be a battle of number one vs. number two when University of Massachusetts Boston hosts Babson College on Saturday night in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Championship. The winner will receive automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III Ice Hockey National Tournament.
It will be the fourth straight postseason clash between the Beavers and Beacons, with the Beavers coming out victorious in each of those meetings. During the regular season the two teams split the series, each taking a win on the road.
The Beacons attack has been consistent all season ranking fourth nationally with 4.37 goals/game, sixth on the power play (24-of-96), and boasts five players with at least 10 goals. Beacon forwards Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.) and Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) rank first and second in the conference with 42 and 34 points respectively while teammate Tyler Bishop (Ramsey, N.J.) leads NEHC defenders with 21 points on 10 goals and 11 assists. In net it's senior Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) whose 2.16 goals against average ranks third in the NEHC.
The Beavers' defense will look to senior netminder Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) to silence the Beacons' attack. Murray is coming off the first postseason shutout of his career and boasts a 1.57 goals against average and .948 save percentage in nine postseason appearances. Babson continues to get production across the board with 10 different players scoring a goal this postseason. Freshman Matt Brazel (Hingham, Mass.) and sophomore Matt McMorrow (Pearl River, N.Y.) will look to keep the offense clicking as they've combined for seven assists in the last two games.
